When I design a new tablescape, I usually have the flowers in mind well ahead of any of the other details. They can add such a wow factor to a table, and also help shape my choices from stemware to decorative accents. For this design, I went big and patriotic for a combination 20th wedding anniversary and 4th of July floral design!
Create a foundation for your floral design
Foundations are a key piece to designing with flowers, so your vessel selection will help guide how you need to “land” your final design. Here, because my color theme was tied to blue and white, and I was using only faux florals, I used a blue and white ginger jar as the vase. When using a tall vase, only a grid of clear floral tape is needed as a guide for your stems.
Placing your flowers in the arrangement
Once I had my vase prepped, I would typically add some greenery as a frame for the flowers. For this arrangement, I opted not to add any added greenery and let some of the leaves from the floral stems peek out here and there – this was enough to add some color balance, while allowing the brightness of the florals to be the main focus in the design.
Whether you use greenery or not, when you start to add flowers, start with your large flowers first, as they take up the most room and spacing them out is important. For this arrangement I used large blue hydrangea stems and large white roses near the base of the arrangement.
Add finshing touches
Once these were placed, I added all of the bright, colorful stems I was using as the main focus – red and watermelon colored roses clustered at the center of the arrangement, and then filled in gaps with smaller, white roses.
For the finishing touch, I tend to add something that will create height or added visual interest. For this arrangement, some lovely purple berry type floral stems gave it just the right amount of whimsy.
This arrangement was the perfect balance to our blue and white July 4th table design and the added pinks and lavender flowers gave it the romantic feel it needed for our wedding anniversary celebration too!
Here’s to your next beautiful floral arrangement, and until next time, Cheers!
