Valentine’s Day is always a fun and festive holiday for us and we typically stay in to celebrate, cook a yummy dinner together and enjoy it at a lovely table setting. This year I created a romantic picnic setting in an overgrown garden with tons of lush flowers blooming everywhere.
Adding Layers
Our Valentine’s Day romantic picnic look came together first with adding layers to the table to create texture. Here, I started with a basic white tablecloth, then overlaid a piece of white lace I picked up at a fabric store. From there, I added a faux fur rug in a dusty rose color, then layered on pampas in both cream and pink for a slightly bohemian feel.
I finished off the romantic theme by adding pink tulle and lace ribbon along the table like a garland, some faux champagne pearls strands and finally loads of different candles in various sizes and shapes to create ambiance. These tall distressed metal taper holders felt both rustic and romantic, while the colorful flower candles matched the loose flowers on the table perfectly!
Creating Ambiance with Florals
Once I had a foundation to start with, I kept the overgrown garden idea going by adding loose flowers and greenery to the table that I found at Michael’s as part of the spring arrivals.
A quick note about sourcing materials for your table design. Most store like Michael’s, Target and World Market put out seasonal décor months ahead of time, and almost a week or two afterwards, many items will go on sale! I tend to shop early, pick out a few items that will work for something I’ve got planned, and then go back to grab them at a good price.
I also used the same flowers and greenery stems in a birdcage, as if it had been left in a garden for the flowers to take over every spring!
Setting the table
For the place setting, I used a rattan charger that I wrapped in the same pink tulle to soften the look, and then added the same faux greenery and flowers to keep us “in the garden” when we dined. The plates, which if you’ve seen used on some of my other tables, are versatile enough that I can change the look with a different salad plate or a fun napkin.
I typically use two napkins for a place setting to give it some color as well as texture. Here, I used a floral patterned cloth napkin from Juliska, and a fringed cream napkin from World Market with a metal flower wrapped napkin ring for added texture.
I hope you’ve enjoyed this Valentine’s Day romantic picnic table design and found some inspiration for your next holiday tablescape! With a beautiful table, any occasion can be elevated to a celebration. Until next time, Cheers!
